Covey writes, and I believe, we must allow ourselves to undergo paradigm shifts — to change ourselves fundamentally and not just alter our attitudes and behaviors on the surface level — in order to achieve true change.

Covey’s seven habits of highly effective people are broken down like this:

  • Habits 1, 2, and 3 are focused on self-mastery and moving from dependence to independence.

  • Habits 4, 5, and 6 are focused on developing teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills, and moving from independence to interdependence.

  • Habit 7 is focused on continuous growth and improvement and embodies all the other habits.

Reasons:Alan Bennett, the British playwright, put it so well:

“The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours.”

I first read Anna Karenina when I was in my last year at high school. At first daunted by the length of the novel, and the long list of complex Russian names printed inside the cover, I soon became totally absorbed. The experience of reading it was as Bennett describes. I could not believe how a story – written in the 1870s – could be so vivid, and speak to me in such a personal way. Having my ‘special and particular’ emotions and inner thoughts described by Tolstoy through his words and characters was deeply moving and affirming.

Anna’s tragic affair with Count Vronsky (not a major spoiler!) tends to be the plotline that the filmmakers focus on, but the parallel love story – the courtship and marriage of Levin and Kitty – is, to my mind, the deeper and even more powerful narrative. Tolstoy based Levin on much of his own personality and personal experience and he is in many respects the central figure in this great novel.

Anna Karenina is a book to be read more than once. Picking it up again recently, having had a few decades of my own life since that first reading, I found it a joy to be reunited with it and, of course, discovered so much more than I had the first time. For me, this novel has been, and continues to be, truly lifechanging.

《The Teaching Life: Professional Learning and Career Progression》
