As a teacher, when it is teachers day,  I also reflect on those teachers that had a significant impact on me in terms of my development.  Mot would expect me to reflect on a Maths teacher, or even a teacher that taught me, but for me this is not the case.

I would like to take the opportunity to express my gratitude to my High School Music teacher, Kathy Rundell, when I was growing up.

I never studied music as an academic subject in school and as such she never directly taught me, but she was pivotal in my formation.

Firstly, she recognized my passion inside me for playing music and introduced me to playing the Viola.  I had previously played the violin but I was not enjoying it at all and she found a way of allowing me to develop. Kathy was one of those teachers that knew how to motivate and get the most out of her students, and for me that was exposing me to playing in local amateur orchestras and facilitating me getting to rehearsals.

This was an amazing opportunity in developing my social and interpersonal skills and has had a lasting effect on how I communicate with both students and colleagues. But Kathy saw other things – she saw leadership qualities and wanted to foster those inside me also. She gave me the opportunity of running school music groups and even being part of organizing aspects of an overseas schools music tour!

She was always there as someone who would push my boundaries and encourage me to do things which I didn’t believe were possible.

If it wasn’t for her gentle reassurance and encouragement, I would never have played for the City of Birmingham Symphony Youth Orchestra,  the National Scout and Guide Symphony Orchestra and certainly would not have conducted them. Her support continued well past leaving school, always encouraging and supporting my journey through young adulthood, both musically and emotionally.

She taught me the importance of what we now refer to as a Growth Mindset. My teaching philosophy has always been centered around developing people and Kathy understood this – as I said I didn’t study academic music, but that didn’t stop her from supporting ALL students.  Her inspiration is one of the reasons I took on a role organizing the International Schools Choral Music Society so that all students can have similar opportunities.
